Different Types of Fishing Rod

Broadly speaking, we've got 7 different types here at FTB.  Each have different uses for different applications and you'll need to consider where you'll be fishing, the sort of fish you hope to catch and the type of bait you'll be using to achieve that aim!

Rods can be differentiated on a number of factors. Material, length, weight (a measure of quality) and activity.  Activity is a gauge on how much flexible strength the rod is likely to hold.

  • Spinning Fishing RodsA spinning fishing rod is a type of fishing rod that is designed for spinning reels, which are reels that are mounted on the underside of the rod. The spinning reel allows the line to be cast further and more accurately than with other types of reels. Spinning fishing rods are typically lighter and more flexible than other types of fishing rods, and are designed to cast lures or bait using a spinning motion. The rod is typically held with one hand, and the reel is operated with the other hand. Spinning fishing rods are available in a range of lengths and weights, and can be used for a variety of fishing techniques, including freshwater and saltwater fishing. Spinning fishing rods are used in a variety of fishing environments, including lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans. They are particularly popular for fishing for species such as bass, trout, and salmon. The spinning reel allows for a more accurate and longer cast, and the flexibility of the rod allows for the angler to feel the bites of fish and to play them effectively once they are hooked.

  • Sea Fishing RodsA sea fishing rod is a specialized type of fishing rod designed to be used in saltwater environments. These rods are typically longer and more robust than freshwater fishing rods, as they need to be able to handle larger fish species and stronger currents. They are also designed to withstand the corrosive effects of saltwater, which can cause damage to lesser quality rods. Sea fishing rods can come in a variety of sizes and styles, but they typically feature a long, flexible shaft made from materials such as carbon fiber or fiberglass. The rod is usually fitted with a reel, which helps the angler to control the line and retrieve their catch. Some sea fishing rods are designed for casting long distances, while others are more suited to bottom fishing, where the bait is dropped directly to the sea bed. Sea fishing rods are used by anglers all over the world, particularly in coastal areas and on offshore fishing trips. They are commonly used to catch a wide range of fish species, including cod, tuna, marlin, and shark. As with any type of fishing, the choice of rod will depend on the type of fish being targeted, the fishing location, and the angler's personal preference.

  • Feeder Fishing RodsA feeder fishing rod is a specialized type of fishing rod designed for coarse fishing. It is used primarily in freshwater environments such as rivers, lakes, and canals, and is particularly popular in Europe and the UK. Feeder fishing rods are designed to cast a small feeder or bait container to a specific spot in the water, which attracts fish to the area. The feeder is filled with bait such as groundbait, maggots, or pellets, which release a scent and attract fish to the area. The rod is designed to be sensitive, allowing the angler to detect the slightest bite or movement of the fish. Feeder fishing rods are typically long and slim, with lengths ranging from 9 to 14 feet. They are designed to be lightweight, allowing for long casts and easy maneuverability. The rod is usually made from carbon fiber or a composite material, which makes it strong and durable. The rod is fitted with a reel, which is used to control the line and retrieve the catch. Feeder fishing is a popular technique used to catch a variety of freshwater species, including carp, bream, roach, and tench. The technique is popular in Europe and the UK, where coarse fishing is a popular pastime. Feeder fishing can be used in a variety of freshwater environments, including rivers, canals, and lakes. The choice of rod will depend on the fishing location, the type of fish being targeted, and the angler's personal preference.

  • Rod and Reel Combos: A rod and reel combo is a fishing setup that includes a fishing rod and a fishing reel that are designed to work together as a single unit. These combos are popular among anglers because they are convenient, affordable, and easy to use. The fishing rod and reel in a combo are matched based on their size, weight, and compatibility with each other. This ensures that the rod and reel work together in harmony to provide the angler with a balanced and effective fishing setup. Rod and reel combos are available in a wide range of styles and sizes to suit different types of fishing, including freshwater and saltwater fishing, as well as different species of fish. Rod and reel combos are used in a variety of fishing environments, including lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans. They are popular among beginner and experienced anglers alike, as they offer a convenient and cost-effective way to get started in fishing or to expand one's fishing gear collection. Combos are also a popular choice for anglers who want to travel light and don't want to carry a lot of bulky fishing gear.

  • Match Fishing RodsA match fishing rod is a type of fishing rod used in freshwater fishing for catching species such as carp, bream, and roach. It is a specialized type of rod designed for use in match fishing tournaments, where anglers compete to catch the most fish within a specific timeframe. Match fishing rods are typically long and slim, with lengths ranging from 10 to 16 feet. They are designed to be lightweight and responsive, allowing the angler to detect even the slightest bites from fish. The rod is usually made from carbon fiber or a composite material, which makes it strong and durable.

  • Carp Fishing RodsA carp fishing rod is a specialized type of fishing rod used to catch carp, a popular species of freshwater fish found in lakes and rivers around the world. Carp fishing rods are typically long and powerful, designed to handle the weight and strength of large carp. Carp fishing rods are usually made from carbon fiber or a composite material, which makes them strong and durable. They typically have a test curve, which is a measure of the rod's strength and its ability to handle the weight of the fish. The test curve of a carp fishing rod can range from 2.5 lbs to 4.5 lbs or higher.

  • Fly Fishing RodsA fly fishing rod is a specialized type of fishing rod used in fly fishing, a popular angling method that involves using artificial flies to catch fish such as trout, salmon, and bass. Fly fishing rods are typically longer and lighter than other types of fishing rods, and are designed to cast the lightweight fly line used in fly fishing. Fly fishing rods are usually made from graphite or fiberglass, and are available in a range of lengths and weights. The weight of the rod is measured in "line weight", which refers to the weight of the fly line the rod is designed to cast. Fly fishing rods can be used in both freshwater and saltwater environments, and are popular among anglers all over the world.
