Different Types of Fishing Reel

Broadly speaking, we've got 7 different types here at Fishing Tackle and Bait.  Each have different uses for different applications and you'll need to consider where you'll be fishing, the sort of fish you hope to catch and the type of bait you'll be using to achieve that aim!

Reels can be differentiated on a number of factors. Size, weight, Material Quality, and fishing type.

  • Baitrunner Reels - Baitrunner reels are designed for use with live bait or free-line fishing. They have a secondary drag system that allows fish to take the bait and swim away without feeling resistance. This can increase the chances of hooking the fish, as they are less likely to detect the angler.
  • Big Pit Reels - Big Pit reels are designed for long-distance casting, and are often used for carp or surf fishing. They have a large spool capacity that allows for longer casts, and a powerful drag system that can handle big fish.
  • Fly Reels - Fly reels are designed for use with fly fishing rods, and are used to store and control the fly line. They have a large arbor that allows for fast retrieval of the line, and a smooth drag system that can handle the sudden runs of a hooked fish.
  • Match Reels - Match reels are designed for use with match fishing rods, and are used for precision casting in freshwater environments. They have a lightweight, low-profile design that allows for comfortable and accurate casting over long periods of time.
  • Multiplier Reels - Multiplier reels, also known as baitcasting reels, are designed for use with baitcasting rods. They are used for targeting larger, stronger fish, and offer more power and control than spinning reels. They have a spool that rotates as the handle is turned, allowing for greater casting distance and accuracy.
  • Spinning Reels - Spinning reels, also known as fixed-spool reels, are the most common type of fishing reel. They are versatile and can be used in both freshwater and saltwater environments, with a wide range of fishing techniques. They have a fixed spool that helps prevent line tangles, and a smooth drag system that can handle a variety of fish species.
  • Rod and Reel Combo's - Rod and reel combos are pre-matched sets of a fishing rod and reel, designed to work together for optimal performance. They are often an affordable and convenient option for beginner anglers or those who want a simple and easy setup.

Overall, choosing the right fishing reel depends on the type of fish you're targeting, the fishing technique you're using, and your personal preferences as an angler. It's important to choose a reel that is compatible with your fishing rod and that offers the appropriate balance of power, control, and performance.
